In the last post, we saw why cooking is important to us but before we indulge in the intricacies of flavours, let's get to know the basics of safe cooking.
There's no smoke without fire and we are strictly told not to play with fire since childhood.
Hence, I've brought to you a collection of rules that we all know, concisely so you can keep it in mind right before starting.Burnt or Steamed:
Before lighting up the gas stove, or microwave or any other appliances that involve either gas or electricity, please check the sockets for leakage and always have a bowl of water handy before starting any type of cooking even if it is to just boil water. Use matchsticks or lighter and not anything made of wax or oil to prevent fire outrage. or faulty connections. It's important to handle hot cutlery or dishes with a glove, mitts or vice and make sure never to expose naked skin to the steam released from the cooking pot (ouch! it burns and scars). Also, don't look directly into the cooking pot even if you're pretty short, use a stool and keep at least two feet from the fire.
Cleanliness equals Tastiness:
The cleaner the food we eat, the cleaner our body is making our thoughts clean too, consequently. Always rinse the utensils to be used for cooking with clean water even if they're washed and dried previously. This prevents infections from spores. Make sure to wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly in water before consumption. A five-minute soak in water prior to rinsing is considered thorough. Do not wash veggies/fruits after cutting them up as this causes water-soluble vitamins to wash away in the water.
Know your Tools:
It's very essential to know the actual vessel to be used for different kinds of food and don't worry, we'll look into this as and when we cover their respective recipes. For starters, do not eat with your knife instead of a fork and always place sharp materials in their respective holders after usage. Use a hollow bottomed vessel only for steam and boil purposes and not for curry or deep fry. Never keep an empty vessel on a lit stove.
The Chef Style:
Cover your hair and trim your nails. I'm not kidding, it's very important to be clean to cook clean. Don't wear materials that are flying around at the slightest draft. Wear Apron if possible. Know the order in which you're going to prepare food so that you have all the ingredients handy to not waste fuel or spoil the blend. Once the food is done, take it off the stove even if it's off because residual heat can change food dynamics.
Hazard Prevention:
Make sure all the electrical appliances in the kitchen area are at least four feet apart from each other to prevent accidental firing and do not place flammable material nearby gas cylinders for a prolonged period even if they are empty canisters. Proof check the quality of all appliances once in every six months and replace the burner once a year to avoid leakage. Please avoid using gadgets in the kitchen (I know this is pretty hard to follow, but consider living another day). If you find it difficult, make sure that you do not attend calls nearby the gas stove or open flame.
Finally, do switch off the stove after the cooking session is over. :)
